Reigning Roland Garros champion ready to rumba into 2018.
Jelena Ostapenko is dancing into the new season with a new coach.

The reigning Roland Garros champion is ready to rumba into 2018. Ostapenko has hired Australian David Taylor as her coach, according to Leo Schlink of The Herald Sun and Latvian media reports.

Taylor, who previously coached Naomi Osaka, guided Samantha Stosur for many years and also worked with Ana Ivanovic.

The 20-year-old Ostapenko parted with former coach Anabel Medina Garrigues, who has taken over as Spanish Fed Cup captain after helping Ostapenko make her major breakthrough in Paris as the first Latvian to win a Grand Slam singles title.

β€œOur co-operation with Anabel has come to an end and I will not be working with her next season,” Ostapenko said. β€œMy mum (Jelena Jakovleva) will always be my head coach, but now I’ve been practicing with David Taylor for two weeks.”

Arriving in Paris as a 47th-ranked teenager winless in two prior trips to Paris, the former professional ballroom dancer capped an inspired run to raising the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen in just her eighth Grand Slam tournament.

Ostapenko became the first woman to win her maiden title in a major since Christine O’Neil did it 39 years ago at the Australian Open.

Stepping out of her adidas, Ostapenko strapped on her dancing shoes for a very dramatic dancing return.

Dancing the rumba at the Baltic Grand Prix, Ostapenko didn’t miss a beat.
